The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
