‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in English soil, an 18-year-old representing Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. The second time he took the field in British turf, against the Black Cats following that, he converted. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, indeed, he repeated the feat. When he returned to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, as well. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed deal, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, the Basque Country, the early training is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to the airport and another trip to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. This is proving a difficult season for the team, partially owing to the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.
In the three years since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to make the first team and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of their lives.
“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the top level but each step you advance through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved emotionally in 2020, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
