Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
